Google’s dominance over your home electronics continues apace.
At Google I/O 2023, the company behind the Pixel phones finally gave us a closer look at the Pixel tablet that Google first showed off at last year’s I/O event. As expected,… it looks like a tablet! It will launch in June for $500. You can pre-order on the Google website(opens in a new tab) now

As you’d expect, the Pixel tablet is powered by the same Tensor G2 chip that powers the Pixel 7 line, so performance shouldn’t be a major concern. Also includes a charging speaker base in each box. You no longer need to buy a separate accessory to turn your tablet into a miniature TV.

It can also connect to a Pixel phone, such as the 7a. Google says the front-facing camera is optimized for video calling, which will no doubt be a major use of this device when combined with the speaker dock. Google’s voice recognition technology is also here to help you type messages faster. Oh, and Chromecast is built-in. Is good.
Perhaps most importantly, Google has worked with more than 50 apps to make them work well on the Pixel tablet’s larger screen. Google Home is an app that has been optimized for the device, as you can turn the tablet into a security hub for your entire home if you want. Multiple users can also have profiles on the tablet, making it as much a device for the home as it is a device for the road.
I’m glad I can finally close the loop that Google opened up on last year’s I/O.
