IDA Ireland, together with Simon Coveney TD, Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment, today announced that Dexcom, specialist in continuous glucose monitoring for people with diabetes, plans to build its new global manufacturing facility in Athenry , Galway.
The project is supported by the Irish government through IDA Ireland and represents an investment of €300 million over five years and the potential to create up to 1,000 highly skilled jobs over the same period.
Taoiseach Leo Varadkar said: “Congratulations to everyone at Dexcom on this move, which is great news for local employment and the local economy in Galway and the wider region, both during the initial construction phase, as even more so with the creation of 1,000 high-tech graduate and technician positions expected in the coming years. I had the pleasure of meeting with Dexcom last year when I visited their headquarters in San Diego. This will be one of the largest single private sector investments ever in the West of Ireland.In addition to the 1,000 jobs the company is creating, it will bring many spin-off opportunities, jobs and contracts for other businesses in the region. The announcement that Athenry will become the first Dexcom manufacturing site in Europe is very much in line with the government’s policy of balanced regional development. It has been enabled by significant government investment in infrastructure in the area and great hard work by IDA Ireland.”
Attending the event, Minister for Business and Employment, Simon Coveney TD, said: “I am delighted that Dexcom has chosen to make this significant new investment in Ireland. It is a great vote of confidence in the important and growing group of talent in Ireland and in the world-class medical technology cluster that has developed in the west of the country.The very substantial employment opportunities that accompany Dexcom’s arrival in Athenry will be a considerable boost to the regions of West MidWest and Midlands”.
Subject to planning permission, the Ireland site will be Dexcom’s first manufacturing site in Europe, expanding the company’s existing capabilities in the US and Malaysia. The new facility will have the capacity to produce millions of Dexcom CGM sensors each year. Subject to planning approval, the new facility will be located on IDA Ireland’s strategic land bank in Athenry.
The Atenry facility will contain an automated manufacturing operation with an emphasis on green technologies. Dexcom expects to offer up to 1,000 graduate and high-tech technician positions once the site is fully operational.
Barry Regan, Dexcom’s executive vice president of global operations, said: “With the continued success of our Dexcom G7 in Europe, we are pursuing an ambitious growth strategy that requires increased manufacturing capacity to support our base of ‘fast-expanding European user base. Ireland has an exceptional talent pool and an established medical technology sector, making Athenry the perfect location for us to establish a new state-of-the-art manufacturing facility.’
