Quordle Today (Game #460): The Answers
The answers to today’s Quordle, game #460, are…
Today’s Quordle has one very difficult answer and three that aren’t too bad. BLUSH, SCOUR, and WINE are pretty straightforward: regular words and regular letters, no real complications. But ELIDE… Well, that’s not a common word. Indeed, the very useful website wordandphrase.com (opens in a new tab) says it ranks as the 31,774th most used word in the English language. Instead, WHINE comes in at 8,055, while both BLUSH and SCOUR are at 9,000. Oh, and it also has a repeated E for good measure.
Fortunately, I found the daily sequence (see below) much easier. I played through it once again as four different Wordle puzzles, rather than starting with three set words as I do in the standard Quordle, and completed it today in seven guesses, my best result yet.

Quordle FAQ: Everything you need to know
What is Quordle?
When Wordle challenges you to guess a new five-letter word each day, Quordle presents you with four puzzles to solve. And instead of completing them in turn, you do it simultaneously. You get nine guesses, instead of Wordle’s six, but the rules are very similar.
It is played online through Quordle website (opens in a new tab) and you can also access it through the Merriam-Webster site (opens in a new tab)after the dictionary bought Quordle last year.
As with Wordle, the answers are the same for every player every day, meaning you’re competing against the rest of the world. And also like Wordle, the puzzle resets at midnight so you have a new challenge every day.
The website also includes a practice mode, which I definitely recommend using before attempting the game properly! – and there are daily stats including a streak count. You also get Quordle Achievements – specific badges for winning a game in a certain number of turns, playing many times, or guessing particularly difficult words.
Oh, and it’s hard. really difficult
What are the Quordle rules?
Quordle’s rules are almost identical to Wordle’s.
1. The letters that are in the answer and in the correct place turn green.
2. Letters that are in the answer but in the wrong place turn yellow.
3. Letters that are not in the answer are grayed out…
4. …BUT the word you guess appears in all the squares of the puzzle at the same time, so an A might turn green in one square, yellow in another, and gray in the last two.
5. Answers are never plural.
6. Letters may appear more than once. So if your guess includes two letters of one, they might both turn yellow, both might turn green, or one might be yellow and the other green.
7. Each guess must be a valid word in the Quordle dictionary. You can’t guess ABCDE, for example.
8. You don’t have to include correct letters in the subsequent guesses, and there is no equivalent to Wordle’s hard mode.
9. You have nine guesses to find Quordle’s answers.
10. You must complete the daily Quordle before midnight in your time zone.
What is a good Quordle strategy?
You need to approach Quordle differently than Wordle. With four puzzles to solve in nine guesses, you can’t blindly throw in cards and expect to win; you’ll have a much better chance if you think strategically.
This is also the case in Wordle, of course, but it’s even more important in Quordle.
There are two key things to remember.
1. Use several opening words
First of all, you won’t want just an initial word, but almost certainly two or three initial words
The first of these should probably be one of the best word starters in Wordle, because the same things that make them work well will apply here as well. But after that, you should select another word or possibly two that use many more of the more common consonants and include the remaining vowels.
For example, I currently use STARE > DOILY > PUNCH. Between them, these three words use 15 of the 26 letters of the alphabet, including the five vowels, Y and nine of the most common consonants (S, T, R, D, L, P, N, C and H). There are plenty of other options – you might want to get an M, B, F or G instead of the H, but something like this should do the trick.
If all goes well, this will give you a good idea of what one or sometimes two of the answers might be. If not, good luck!
2. Narrow things down
Second, if you come across a word where the answer could easily be one of several options, for example -ATCH, where it could be MATCH, BATCH, LATCH, CATCH, WATCH, HATCH, or PATCH, you’ll definitely want to – it guess a word that narrows down these options.
In Wordle, on the other hand, you can try several in a row and hope that one is right, assuming you have enough guesses left. It’s risky, but sometimes it will work. Also, it’s the only option on hard mode. But in Quordle, this will almost certainly result in failure: you simply don’t have enough assumptions.
In the above scenario, CLAMP would be a great guess as it could point the way to four of the seven words at once.
