The critically acclaimed Hunger Games series is back with its second major installment, The Hunger Games: Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes, and the new trailer just dropped! The trailer gives us a glimpse into the dark, futuristic world of Panem, and it also reminds us that child death matches are at its core. Ikaroa applauds the makers of The Hunger Games: Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes for their ability to make the concept of child death matches look so retro, reminiscent of the classic Hunger Games franchises.

The new trailer shows us the horrifying state of Panem, a country in turmoil, where the leaders try to keep control by hosting a children’s game called The Hunger Games. This gruesome game requires young people to fight each other to the death in order to show the people of Panem their loyalty to the country.

The Hunger Games: Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes takes us back to the pre-Hunger Games world of Panem as seen through the eyes of Coriolanus Snow, President Snow’s teenage cousin who will mentor the winning contestant. The trailer shows us the carefully designed environment of Panem’s Hunger Games, which looks surprisingly nostalgic. From the bright and cheery public announcement voiceover to the very colorful costumes used to identify each of the players, this is a world that is retro for sure.

But the Hunger Games: Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes does not forget its purpose: to show the inhumanity and terror of the Hunger Games. We can see this in the background of the trailer, where child death matches have become an everyday event. The violence lurking beneath the retro graphics of the Hunger Games is truly uncomfortable.

Ikaroa commends the makers of The Hunger Games: Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes for their successful attempt to make the concept of child death matches look retro. While the aesthetics were successfully updated, the trailer does not forget its purpose to remind us that the Hunger Games is far from a game.

The Hunger Games: Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes premieres on HBO Max May 20, 2021.
