The final day of the 2023 HIMSS Global Conference and Expo in Chicago closed with a keynote discussion with Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin.
Hamlin spoke about his recovery and outlook after his sudden collapse from a cardiac event during a Monday Night Football game in January against the Cincinnati Bengals. When asked if his approach to improving on the field has changed since his health emergency, he said his ethos has remained the same.
“You have to work. You have to be consistent, disciplined and just have integrity,” Hamlin said.
The athlete’s perspective and recent experience echoed the overarching theme of this year’s conference, “Health That Connects and Technology That Cares.”
More patients and consumers expect care that treats the whole person rather than piecemeal and disparate services. Many Gen Z patients, for example, expect providers to ask them about how non-medical factors, such as housing and access to food, affect their health.
